Robert Russell said the Police Department's chief of Los Angeles County who never gave up on finding his Austin Healey 1967 was stolen at his home in Philadelphia in 1970.
Russell placed what he believed was his car on eBay and examined the vehicle identification number on the Web site with the ownership certificate and discovered that there were similarities, the department said in a statement.
Russell, who now lives in Texas, contacted the department in May, and Detective Carlos Ortega tracked vehicle in East Los Angeles.
"The detective located the Austin Healey Ortega stolen in car sales site mentioned in the notice of eBay and confirmed that the car was the same vehicle that Mr. Russell reported as stolen," the department.
After collaborating with the Philadelphia police to solve some issues for the identification of the vehicle, the department told Russell that he could take his car.
Then took it to Texas. The place of residence of Russell was not known immediately.
Russell told police he bought the car at $ 3,000, and is now valued at $ 23,000.
Russell said, according to the department, which "persisted in finding the vehicle not for their monetary value but because it had sentimental value to him and his wife."
